A new lawsuit has been filed against the makers of Xarelto due to allegations of dangerous side effects. The plaintiff sustained severe injuries caused by a life-threatening bleed from Xarelto after being prescribed the medication from a physician.
Xarelto is a commonly used blood thinner prescribed to reduce the risk of stroke and systemic embolism in patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation, to treat and reduce the risk of deep vein thrombosis (DVT) and pulmonary embolism, and to prevent DVT for patients undergoing hip or knee replacement surgery.
New research and adverse event reports from patients, however, show that people may suffer severe injuries caused by a life-threatening bleed from Xarelto despite the fact that it’s marketed as a safe and modern alternative for treating the above-mentioned issues.
Xarelto has been linked to severe and uncontrollable bleeding in patients because it does not have a bleeding antidote. If a Xarelto patient begins to hemorrhage, there is very little a doctor can do to stop the bleeding.
Hundreds of lawsuits have been filed by patients who suffered a life-threatening bleed from Xarelto and from family members of patients who died from Xarelto bleeding. These lawsuits accuse the drug manufacturer of failing to properly warn physicians and patents about the risk of uncontrollable bleeding from Xarelto and that no antidote to stop the bleeding exists.
Plaintiff Louise P. of Ohio is one of many who has alleged a life-threatening bleed from Xarelto in legal action against the drug’s manufacturers.
The manufacturers of the drug are accused of making an unsafe drug and marketing the medication to the medical community without a full disclosure of the risks. Furthermore, the defendants are accused of failing to carry out the proper tests in order to ensure that the medication was safe for use.
In this case, which argues that the plaintiff was ultimately the victim of a life-threatening bleed from Xarelto, the patient began taking the drug on September 1, 2015. The medication was taken through September 18, 2015. On September 13th, the patient suffered gastrointestinal bleeding believed to be tied to Xarelto use. The life-threatening bleeding from Xarelto led to a hospital stay, medical expenses, and severe permanent injuries, according to the lawsuit filed.
Xarelto inhibits thrombin, a substance necessary for blood clotting in the human body. When there is no mechanism in the body to stop blood flow, it can lead to severe or a deadly combination of medical conditions. If bleeding occurs in the upper GI tract, which is made up of the stomach, some of the small intestine, and the esophagus, bleeding can cause abdominal tenderness, vomiting blood, and stomach upset. If doctors do not intervene immediately, life-threatening injuries can occur.
More often than not, an underlying condition is exacerbated by use of Xarelto that causes gastrointestinal bleeding. The underlying conditions could include stomach ulcer bleeding, chronic acid reflux, bleeding intestinal polyps, anal fissures, or ulcerative colitis.
If left untreated, internal bleeding can develop into life-threatening complications. In the worst cases, the patient may even die from gastrointestinal bleeding if its not caught right away.
